You will not need to go to your mechanic again and again, if you do clear obd2 Codes & read Abs codes by yourself.

What Is TPMS?

TPMS stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System. It is an electronic system that monitors the air pressure of the tires on a vehicle and alerts the driver if the pressure is too low. The TPMS is typically located in the tire valve stem or inside the tire, and it uses sensors to measure the tire pressure.

When the pressure in one or more of the tires drops below a certain level, a warning light will appear on the dashboard of the vehicle, indicating that the tire pressure needs to be checked and adjusted.

TPMS helps improve the safety and fuel efficiency of vehicles by ensuring that the tires are properly inflated, which reduces the risk of tire failure, improves vehicle handling, and saves fuel.

Can a scan tool reset TPMS?

FAQ

How much does it cost to reset TPMS?

It costs you nothing to reset TPMS on your own as you only need to press and hold the button or let the resetting procedure. However, you still have to pay inflating tire or service fees when you use dealership or auto shop services.

The cost may vary depending on the services you need including tire inflation, replacement, repair, or rotation.

Do you need to reset tpms after new tires?

Most modern cars require you to reset TPMS after replacing old tires with new ones or simply rotating them.

Even if the tire has been inflated to the proper or suggested PSI, the TPMS warning light would be still on and need resetting or re-calibration.

Why Does TPMS Light On?

When TPMS lights on, it means that the system is recognizing irregularities or problems in your tire system.

The light is to warn you about potential or actual tire problems so you can respond to them immediately, especially when the tire pressure isn’t at the correct PSI.

However, TPMS can also be triggered as you change, rotate, or inflate the tires.

Is it Dangerous Driving with Low Tire Pressure Light?

TPMS light would typically be on as there are changes in the tire pressure condition and it works as a warning for you. It’s definitely dangerous to drive your car with tire pressure below the proper PSI.

Once you’ve noticed the TPMS light is on, check your tires and inflate them to the proper PSI before resetting the system.

What Does TPMS Fail?

The most common cause of TPMS failing problems is malfunctioning sensors in the system. The sensors may require replacement because of the damages or the end of their lifespan.

However, it can also be caused by the dead batteries that power the sensors where the whole sensor replacement isn’t necessary. When the TPMS light can’t be reset, it could be a sign of TPMS failures.

Conclusion

When the TPMS lights on, you’d need to perform re-calibration so the system can relearn the changes. These include when the tires are rotated, inflated, changed, or damaged.

After calibration, the TPMS light would go off as the system recognized the changes. A scan tool isn’t necessary as you can manually reset TPMS referring to the resetting procedure that varies for car models.

However, it’s very important to ensure and inflate tires to the correct pressure or settle all related issues before resetting the TPMS light.
